Durham took firm control against Kent on a rain-interrupted second day at Chester-le-Street, thanks to a dominant display from their seam attack led by Matthew Potts.
Resuming under overcast skies, Kent’s batting never quite settled as Potts and Kemar Roach shared six wickets to bowl them out for 197. Despite a valiant 94 from Sam Northeast on his return to the side, Kent collapsed around him, conceding a first-innings deficit of 138.
Early strikes set the tone, with Ben Raine removing Tawanda Muyeye and Daniel Bell-Drummond in quick succession. Potts then exploited extra bounce to dismiss Joey Evison, leaving Kent struggling.
Northeast stood firm, reaching a composed half-century and anchoring the innings amid regular wickets. However, a lack of support proved costly as Durham kept applying pressure. After a rain delay and an early lunch, the hosts resumed their dominance, with wickets falling steadily once play restarted.
Roach wrapped up the innings by dismissing Northeast for 94, denying him a deserved century and sealing a strong bowling effort for Durham.
In reply, Durham’s second innings had minor hiccups as they lost two early wickets, but they quickly regained control. By stumps, they were 83 for 2, extending their overall lead to 221 and putting the game firmly in their grasp.
With conditions still favouring seam and interruptions likely to play a role, Kent now face a daunting fourth-innings chase. Durham, meanwhile, will look to press home their advantage and push for a decisive victory heading into day three.
