Australian fast bowler Michael Neser produced a brilliant spell of seam bowling to put Queensland cricket team in a strong position against Tasmania cricket team on day one of their crucial Sheffield Shield clash in Hobart.
Neser claimed outstanding figures of 5 for 37 to bowl Tasmania out for 198 at Bellerive Oval, keeping Queensland firmly in contention for a place in the Shield final.
After winning the toss, Queensland’s bowlers made early inroads. Neser struck first by finding the edge of Caleb Jewell’s bat, with fellow pacer Xavier Bartlett taking a sharp catch at first slip. Bartlett then helped remove Tim Ward shortly afterward, leaving Tasmania struggling early in the innings.
Tasmania attempted to rebuild through Jake Weatherald, who scored a brisk 39, but his promising knock ended with a sharp run-out following an excellent piece of fielding by Hugo Burdon.
Queensland also found success through Marnus Labuschagne, who dismissed Charlie Wakim with a well-disguised offcutter before lunch. However, the day ultimately belonged to Neser, who returned after the interval to remove key batters Beau Webster and Jake Doran with deliveries that moved away to take the edge.
He then wrapped up the tail to complete a superb five-wicket haul.
Despite the strong bowling performance, Queensland’s batting struggled late in the day. Tasmania seamers Beau Webster and Lawrence Neil-Smith struck early, reducing the visitors to 48 for 3 at stumps. Key batters Matt Renshaw and Labuschagne were both dismissed cheaply.
Queensland now trail by 150 runs heading into day two and must win the match outright—along with favourable results elsewhere—to secure a spot in the Sheffield Shield final. 🏏
