Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya opted to bowl first against Kolkata Knight Riders in their IPL 2026 opener at the Wankhede Stadium, with both sides handing out several debut caps.
Mumbai Indians introduced three fresh faces, with Afghanistan mystery spinner AM Ghazanfar, India allrounder Shardul Thakur, and West Indies batter Sherfane Rutherford making their debuts for the franchise. MI also backed Ryan Rickelton over the more experienced Quinton de Kock at the top of the order.
Pandya pointed to a slightly greener pitch than usual at Wankhede as a factor in his decision, suggesting early assistance for seamers. MI’s pace attack will be spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah alongside Trent Boult and Thakur, while spin duties will be shared by Mayank Markande and Ghazanfar.
KKR, led by Ajinkya Rahane, also featured three debutants in their XI. Veteran spinner Sunil Narine completed their overseas contingent.
Rahane noted the unusual amount of grass on the surface, hinting that conditions might favor bowlers early on. KKR also entrusted young Angkrish Raghuvanshi with wicketkeeping duties.
Historically, MI have dominated this rivalry, winning 24 of 35 matches overall and enjoying a strong record at Wankhede. However, KKR have had the edge in recent meetings, adding intrigue to the contest.
