Carey delivered a captain’s knock of 103—his second century in consecutive Shield finals—anchoring South Australia’s second innings. He found crucial support in McAndrew, who scored a resilient 60, as the pair stitched together a vital 105-run partnership after the side had slumped to 122 for 7. Earlier, Scott Boland had threatened to blow the game open with two wickets in two balls, finishing with 3 for 78.
Carey’s innings was marked by composure under pressure, steadily guiding the lower order while managing the strike expertly. McAndrew complemented him with a determined display, mixing solid defence with aggressive strokeplay, including a standout upper cut for six.
Set 196 to win, Victoria’s chase began in disastrous fashion. Early breakthroughs from McAndrew and Jordan Buckingham reduced them to 35 for 3, putting South Australia firmly on top. However, Marcus Harris and Peter Handscomb rebuilt with a 67-run partnership, briefly steadying the innings.
