Lucknow Super Giants Eliminated; Final Playoff Spot Hangs in the Balance

Lucknow Super Giants have become the fifth team to be eliminated from the race to the IPL 2025 playoffs following their defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday. With Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings already securing three of the four available spots, the final place in the playoffs will now go to either Mumbai Indians or Delhi Capitals. The two teams will face each other in a crucial clash on Wednesday, which also marks Mumbai Indians’ first match since the IPL resumed on May 17.

As things stand, Mumbai Indians are in fourth place with 14 points from 12 matches and a healthy net run rate of 1.156. Delhi Capitals sit just behind them in fifth place with 13 points from 12 games and a net run rate of 0.260. Both teams have two games remaining, including the high-stakes encounter at the Wankhede.

If Mumbai Indians win on May 21, they will move to 16 points and secure their spot in the playoffs before even playing their final league match against Punjab Kings. A win for Mumbai would eliminate Delhi Capitals, as the maximum they could then reach would be 15 points, which wouldn't be enough.

However, if Delhi Capitals defeat Mumbai, the situation becomes more complex. Delhi would move to 15 points while Mumbai remain on 14, and the battle for the final playoff spot would continue into the final round of league fixtures. Should Delhi follow up that victory with another against Punjab Kings on May 24 in Jaipur, they would qualify with 17 points and knock Mumbai out of the tournament.

On the other hand, if Delhi beat Mumbai but then lose to Punjab, they will be stuck on 15 points. That scenario gives Mumbai a way back into the playoffs — if they can defeat Punjab Kings in their final game on May 26, they would reach 16 points and edge Delhi out of contention.

The identity of the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs could be revealed as early as May 21 or could be dragged out until May 26, depending on how the results fall. While the race for the final playoff spot may conclude this week, the fight to finish in the top two positions — and secure two chances to reach the final — looks set to continue right until the end of the league stage.
