John Campbell makes the fastest West Indies ODI fifty against India on the way to 101

John Campbell reached fifty from 29 balls and a hundred from 65 in Guwahati, the quickest any West Indies batter has gone to an ODI fifty against India

West Indies were 189 for 2 in the 24th over of the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, after Shubman Gill won the toss and put them in.

Campbell made 101 from 68 balls with nine fours and five sixes, pulling Gurnoor Brar to deep square leg, where Naman Dhir caught him with the total on 153 for 2 in the 20th over.

It was the first hundred of a series India lead 1-0, and a marked change of gear from the 62 from 60 balls Campbell made in the opening match in Thiruvananthapuram on 27 September.

Twenty-nine balls to fifty

Campbell went at the new ball from the first over. West Indies were 33 without loss after four, and 37 for 1 after five when Keacy Carty went for 9, caught by Dhir off Prasidh Krishna.

Campbell took a six and three fours off Krishna in the seventh over, then brought up the fifty with a six over deep fine leg off Brar.

The half-century took 29 balls. His fifty in Thiruvananthapuram three days earlier had taken 49.

West Indies were scoring at just under eight an over through the opening 24, on a surface India had chosen to bowl on.

Past a Gayle mark that stood 24 years

No West Indies batter had reached an ODI fifty against India in fewer deliveries. Chris Gayle set the mark at 30 balls in Ahmedabad in 2002 and matched it at Port of Spain in 2019.

Campbell's 29 balls moved him a delivery clear and took the record outright.

The hundred followed from 65 balls, completed with a single off Kuldeep Yadav. The left-hander has now passed fifty in both matches of the series.

A stand of 107 from 72 balls

Campbell and Shai Hope added 107 from 72 balls for the second wicket, carrying West Indies from 37 for 1 to 153 for 2.

The visitors were 147 for 1 after 18 overs, and Brar's wicket was the only one to fall between the fifth over and the 24th.

Hope, who captains and keeps wicket, had reached 45 from 45 balls by the end of the 22nd over and was unbeaten with Amir Jangoo alongside him.

A debut in the middle of it

India handed Auqib Nabi his first cap, the Jammu and Kashmir seamer replacing Nitish Kumar Reddy in the XI. Campbell hit the debutant for boundaries and sixes in his opening spell.

Gill had read the pitch as one for his bowlers at the toss, describing “a bit more grass” and a surface that “looks a bit more patchy”, and noting it was “more humid here, so more challenge for our bowlers”.

Krishna and Brar took the wickets. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja were without one through the opening 24 overs.

India had won the first match in Thiruvananthapuram to go one up in the three-match series.

Where the innings stands

West Indies had more than 26 overs left at that point, with Hope and Jangoo together and Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase and Keemo Paul to come.

The visitors made four changes for this match. Justin Greaves is out with a calf injury, and Vitel Lawes came into the side.

India bat second with Rohit Sharma, Gill, Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad in their top four and KL Rahul keeping wicket. A win in Guwahati takes the three-match series.
