India drop Shai Hope twice as West Indies race past 230 in Guwahati

India put down Shai Hope twice inside the first 20 overs in Guwahati and then watched West Indies race past 230 before the innings was two thirds old

Shubman Gill won the toss at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium and asked West Indies to bat, a decision that grew more expensive with every over. West Indies were 234 for 2 after 29.5 overs in the second one-day international, scoring at close to eight an over.

John Campbell had already taken the game away from India with the fastest one-day hundred made by a West Indian, but it was the two chances India spilled that let Hope settle into a captain's innings beside him.

India lead the three-match series 1-0 after an eight-wicket win in the opener, and made one change for Guwahati, handing a debut to the seamer Auqib Nabi in place of Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Two chances go down

Hope was on 15 when Kuldeep Yadav failed to hold a catch, and on 27 when Virat Kohli put down a second.

The West Indies captain made India pay for both. He reached his fifty from 51 balls, with four fours and a six, working a Naman Dhir delivery away for two.

By the time the innings passed the halfway mark he had moved to 65 from 64 balls, with five fours and a six, and West Indies had the platform for a total India have not had to chase in this series.

Campbell sets the pace

Campbell's hundred came from 65 balls, completed with a single off Kuldeep, and it is the quickest any West Indian has reached three figures in a one-day international.

He fell almost immediately afterwards for 101 from 68 balls, an innings of nine fours and five sixes, caught by Naman Dhir at deep square leg off Gurnoor Brar.

Before that he and Hope had added 107 from 72 balls for the second wicket, the partnership that turned a good start into a dominant one.

Hope and Jangoo press on

Campbell's dismissal brought no slowdown. Amir Jangoo joined Hope and was 43 not out from 37 balls, with seven fours, as the scoring rate held above seven and a half.

Keacy Carty had been the only other wicket to fall, caught by Naman Dhir off Prasidh Krishna in the opening overs.

India have used Naman Dhir in the field to good effect, both of the wickets to fall so far ending in his hands, but the catches that mattered went down elsewhere.

India's bowlers search for a grip

Kuldeep was the most economical of them, his figures reading 5.4-0-30-0 as the innings approached its second half.

Ravindra Jadeja found it harder. The left-arm spinner had conceded 53 from seven overs without a wicket, unusual returns for a bowler India lean on to squeeze the middle overs.

Brar and Prasidh had the two wickets between them, but neither India's seamers nor their spinners had found a way to stop the run rate climbing.

The series on the line

A defeat in Guwahati would end the series with a match still to play, and West Indies arrived at this ground knowing as much.

For India, the concern is less the total than the way it has been built. Two dropped catches and a debutant's first day in international cricket have coincided with their most difficult session of the tour.

Gill's side controlled the first match from start to finish. Guwahati is asking a different question of them, and the answer will have to come with the bat.
