'It's all about rhythm for him' – Simons believes Pathirana is nearing peak form

Matheesha Pathirana, a standout for CSK in 2023, has struggled to replicate that form in IPL 2025, picking up just nine wickets in eight games with an economy rate of 10.40. A key factor has been a modified bowling action, one that emerged during the SA20 earlier this year, possibly at the request of Sri Lanka Cricket.

CSK bowling consultant Eric Simons believes Pathirana is nearly back to his best. "It's a feel thing for him, more than a technical issue now," Simons said after CSK’s loss to Punjab Kings. “His arm height is more consistent again, and he’s gradually returning to where he was.”

Head coach Stephen Fleming had also acknowledged the action change, noting significant progress since South Africa. “We hope he keeps improving and eventually settles on a version of his action that brings out his best,” he said.

Despite recent struggles — including a forgettable outing against MI — Pathirana showed signs of rhythm against PBKS, claiming two wickets even as he conceded 45 runs. Simons emphasized that the challenge now lies more in tactical evolution than accuracy alone. “Batters are playing him differently. It’s about how he adapts next,” he added.
