The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken the unprecedented decision to suspend the remainder of IPL 2025 due to rising cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. A formal announcement from the board is expected soon, but the decision effectively halts the tournament just as it was entering its final stretch.

The move follows Thursday night’s abandoned game between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dharamsala, which was first delayed by rain and then called off due to a floodlight failure caused by a power outage. However, the broader geopolitical developments appear to have influenced the more drastic step taken since then.

With the Dharamsala airport and surrounding airspace shut down, the IPL swiftly arranged for players and support staff from both PBKS and DC to be evacuated by a special train to Delhi on Friday morning—a sign that the situation had escalated beyond typical logistical challenges.

So far, 58 matches have been completed this season, including the incomplete game in Dharamsala. Twelve group-stage fixtures remain, originally scheduled across multiple venues: Lucknow (2), Hyderabad, Ahmedabad (3), Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru (2), Mumbai, Jaipur. The playoffs were planned to be held in Hyderabad and Kolkata.

This marks the first time in IPL history that the tournament has been suspended mid-season due to geopolitical tensions. While the BCCI has not confirmed whether the tournament will resume later or be called off entirely, the current halt introduces uncertainty over the final standings, the Orange and Purple Cap races, and the eventual title outcome.
