IPL 2025: Marsh’s Century Powers LSG to Consolation Win Over GT

Mitchell Marsh produced a stunning century to power Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to a 33-run win over Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad, in what was ultimately a consolation victory for his team. Batting first on a batting-friendly black-soil pitch, LSG posted a formidable 235 for 2, thanks largely to Marsh’s 117 off 64 balls—his first IPL hundred and only second in T20 cricket—and a blistering 56* from Nicholas Pooran.

Despite losing the toss, LSG made full use of their chance to bat. Early issues with the landing area caused slips and missteps for GT’s bowlers, but once Marsh got his eye in, there was little respite. He and Aiden Markram added 91 for the first wicket before Pooran joined Marsh to launch a furious assault on the GT bowling. The pair added 121 runs in just 52 deliveries. Rashid Khan, usually a banker for GT, was smashed for 25 runs in a single over by Marsh, who shifted gears spectacularly after reaching his half-century.

Gujarat Titans' chase got off to a decent start with Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan looking in good touch, but once Sudharsan chipped one to mid-off and Gill followed suit a couple of overs later, the innings began to wobble. Jos Buttler’s dismissal soon after left the middle order with a steep task. For once, however, that unit did put up a fight. Sherfane Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan built a strong partnership, adding 86 runs and keeping the required rate within striking distance.

But when Will O’Rourke returned to bowl the 17th over, he removed Rutherford and Rahul Tewatia in the space of six balls, conceding just four runs. From there, the momentum evaporated and GT managed only 20 runs in the last four overs, without hitting a single boundary. Shahrukh, who had reached his fifty in just 22 balls, began to lose shape under pressure as LSG tightened the noose.

The defeat significantly dented Gujarat’s hopes of finishing in the top two, while LSG exited the tournament with a flourish. For Marsh, this knock was a timely reminder of his destructive potential in T20 cricket, especially given the batter-only contract he's been working under this season. It was also a night where LSG’s intent and execution aligned, something they’d struggled to achieve consistently throughout the campaign.
