India’s XI and tactics under pressure as Ireland eye historic series win

The pressure is firmly on India national cricket team ahead of the second T20I after a shock defeat to Ireland cricket team in the series opener raised serious questions over team selection, bowling plans, and adaptability to conditions.

India’s 12-match winning streak in T20I series/tournaments ended with Friday’s defeat, though they still have one major record to protect — 16 consecutive unbeaten T20I series/tournaments. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, already under scrutiny after recent setbacks, reportedly called for optional practice despite the short turnaround between matches.

The first T20I wasn’t a total collapse for India. They had Ireland at 30/3, but failed to capitalize. Two poorly executed overs shifted momentum dramatically, allowing Ireland to recover and eventually clinch a historic win.

A major talking point is captain Shreyas Iyer’s tactical decisions, especially his delayed use of Washington Sundar, who bowled his first over only in the 16th over against two right-hand batters — a move that backfired as Ireland accelerated.

Selection headache: Will Vaibhav debut?

All eyes are now on whether 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi finally gets his debut.

Washington’s selection looked questionable in the opener due to Ireland’s right-heavy batting lineup. India could:

  • Replace Washington with Suryansh Shedge for extra pace-hitting depth, or
  • Bring in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, adding more firepower at the top

Probable India XI:

  • Sanju Samson
  • Abhishek Sharma / Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
  • Ishan Kishan
  • Shreyas Iyer (c)
  • Tilak Varma
  • Washington Sundar / Suryansh Shedge
  • Shivam Dube
  • Axar Patel
  • Arshdeep Singh
  • Harshit Rana
  • Ravi Bishnoi / Prasidh Krishna

Ireland dreaming bigger

Ireland have no reason to change a winning combination.

Debutant left-arm quick Jai Moondra, originally from Rajasthan’s Tonk (same hometown as Khaleel Ahmed), became the breakout star by taking a wicket with his very first ball in international cricket — against India, the country of his birth.

Captain Lorcan Tucker continues to impress too, having scored a fifty in each of the three T20Is he has captained Ireland.

Conditions remain challenging

Expect another difficult batting surface in Belfast:

  • Slightly slow wicket
  • Extra bounce for pacers
  • Large square boundaries
  • Pleasant weather

These conditions heavily favor bowlers who hit hard lengths and force batters to play square.

Key stat

A worrying sign for India: Prasidh Krishna has conceded 125 runs in his last two T20Is, the most by any bowler in consecutive T20Is in recorded stats.

With Ireland sensing a historic series win and India desperate to avoid embarrassment, the second T20I promises high stakes and serious pressure on the visitors.
