Abhishek admits Ireland outbowled India in historic Belfast upset

Abhishek Sharma admitted that Ireland’s bowling unit executed far better than India after the visitors suffered a shock 34-run defeat in the first T20I — India’s first-ever loss to Ireland cricket team in any format.

Abhishek was one of the few positives for India national cricket team, smashing a rapid 49 off 20 balls, but even he acknowledged that Belfast’s conditions made aggressive strokeplay difficult.“There was something in the wicket. Some shots were difficult to hit, and Ireland executed their plans really well,” Abhishek said after the match.

India struggled to adjust to the seaming surface and large square boundaries, with most batters unable to find fluency during the chase. Abhishek credited Ireland for outperforming India in all departments.“The way Ireland played with bat, ball and in the field, they truly deserved this victory.”

A major factor in Ireland’s win was the impact of debutant pacers Jai Moondra and Matt Hollard, who shared five wickets between them.

• Moondra struck with his first ball in international cricket, dismissing Sanju Samson
• Hollard removed Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer early
• India slipped to 60/3, putting them on the back foot

Moondra finished with 2/25, while Hollard returned 3/28.

Despite the surprise factor of the debutants, Abhishek said India had prepared well and weren’t caught unaware.“Our analysts and coaches had enough information. I wouldn’t say Jai was a surprise — he simply bowled really well.”

He stressed that India’s main takeaway was the need to adapt faster in overseas conditions.“As a dominant team, you need to adapt quickly. That’s what we tried, but unfortunately it didn’t happen today.”

With the series still alive, India will now look to bounce back in the second T20I and avoid a rare bilateral series defeat to Ireland.
