ICC Clears Bangladesh of Sanctions After T20 World Cup Exclusion, Confirms Future Hosting Rights

The International Cricket Council has confirmed that Bangladesh Cricket Board will not face any punishment following Bangladesh’s refusal to play their matches of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India — a decision that ultimately led to their exclusion from the tournament.

In a statement issued by the ICC, the governing body made it clear that no financial, sporting, or administrative penalties would be imposed on Bangladesh. The ICC also acknowledged that the BCB retains the right to approach its Dispute Resolution Committee should it choose to do so, reinforcing the organisation’s emphasis on neutrality and fairness.

Crucially, the ICC confirmed that Bangladesh will be awarded the hosting rights for an ICC event prior to the 2031 Men’s ODI World Cup, which Bangladesh is scheduled to co-host with India. The decision was framed as a vote of confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to stage major tournaments and part of the ICC’s broader commitment to developing the game across its membership.

Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland in the ongoing T20 World Cup after the Bangladeshi government declined to grant permission for travel to India. The BCB had proposed relocating their matches to Sri Lanka, but the ICC Board rejected the proposal and opted for replacement instead. The episode unfolded amid strained political relations between India and Bangladesh and was further complicated by Board of Control for Cricket in India withdrawing Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL.

The situation gained wider significance after Pakistan Cricket Board announced it would participate in the tournament but boycott its group match against India, citing Bangladesh’s exclusion. Talks involving ICC officials, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, and BCB president Aminul Islam have since taken place, with Bangladesh’s case now formally resolved.

ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta described Bangladesh’s absence as “regrettable” but stressed that the country remains a core cricketing nation and a priority for long-term investment, development, and global integration within the sport.
