Moises Henriques Retires from First-Class Cricket

New South Wales (NSW) captain Moises Henriques has officially retired from first-class cricket, stepping away from the format midway through the 2024–25 season. The 38-year-old, who featured in four Tests for Australia, will continue playing white-ball cricket, remaining available for NSW in the One-Day Cup and with one season left on his contract with the Sydney Sixers, where he also serves as captain.

Henriques hasn’t played a Sheffield Shield match since early November. Jack Edwards, appointed NSW’s one-day skipper before the season began, led the side in the Shield for the remainder of the campaign, guiding them to a strong finish just outside the final.

“I’d made my decision before Christmas that it was time to step away from Sheffield Shield cricket,” Henriques said. “It’s been an honour to lead and represent this great state, but playing for NSW means performing as well as leading. At my age, I felt I wasn’t delivering match-winning contributions in the longer format, and that’s a standard I believe I needed to uphold.”

Henriques retires with a respectable first-class record: 6830 runs at an average of 34.84, including 13 centuries, along with 127 wickets at 30.75. His career began with high expectations, and he impressed on Test debut in Chennai in 2013, scoring 68 and an unbeaten 81 against India. However, he struggled in his subsequent three Tests and did not reach double figures in any of them.

“I leave the team in excellent hands with Jack Edwards,” Henriques said. “He’s already shown impressive leadership so early in his career. I also want to thank Cricket NSW — I’ve been part of this setup since I was 17. After 21 years, I’ll continue to give my best in the shorter formats and contribute to the game that’s given me so much.”

NSW head coach Greg Shipperd praised Henriques for his enduring influence both on and off the field.

“Moises’ on-field achievements are well known, but what he’s brought to NSW cricket behind the scenes has been just as significant,” Shipperd said. “He’s a true professional and a leader in every sense. Even this year, during the One-Day Cup and BBL, he’s proven he still has plenty to offer, and I look forward to continuing our work together.”

Henriques’ retirement marks the end of an era in NSW cricket, as the team looks ahead to a future guided by a new generation of leaders.
