Hazlewood Draws Level with Noor in Purple Cap Race as Orange Cap Top Stays Unchanged
While the Orange Cap standings remain steady heading into Saturday's double-header, there's a new name pushing for the top spot in the Purple Cap race after Punjab Kings (PBKS) handed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) their third straight home defeat on Friday night.
Josh Hazlewood was the standout for RCB in a rain-shortened 14-over contest, returning figures of 3 for 14. Despite RCB’s continued struggles at home, Hazlewood’s performance saw him climb the Purple Cap chart, surpassing the likes of Kuldeep Yadav (DC), Hardik Pandya (MI), Khaleel Ahmed (CSK), and Shardul Thakur (LSG)—all of whom have 11 wickets.
He also leapfrogged a packed group on 10 wickets, including Prasidh Krishna, R Sai Kishore, and Mohammed Siraj (GT), Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana (KKR), and Mitchell Starc (DC). PBKS’ Arshdeep Singh joined that group too, after his 2 for 23 against RCB.
Hazlewood now sits tied at the top with Chennai Super Kings' Noor Ahmad, both with 12 wickets from seven matches. However, Noor retains the Purple Cap due to a superior economy rate of 7.12 compared to Hazlewood’s 8.17.
No movement at the top here: Nicholas Pooran (LSG) remains the Orange Cap holder, followed by B Sai Sudharsan (GT) and Mitchell Marsh (LSG). Suryakumar Yadav (MI) holds fourth place.
PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer missed a chance to climb up the ranks after managing just 7 runs in ten balls against RCB, keeping him in fifth. Virat Kohli, too, had an opportunity to move up but fell for 1, remaining in sixth place.
