Hay’s Near-Ton, Sears’ Fiery Five-For Power New Zealand to Series Win

Mitchell Hay’s unbeaten 99 and a devastating fast-bowling display led by Ben Sears propelled New Zealand to a dominant 84-run win over Pakistan, clinching the series 2-0. After being pegged back mid-innings by the sharp spin of Sufiyan Muqeem, New Zealand surged back with both bat and ball. Set a target of 293, Pakistan collapsed early, losing half their side for just 32 within 12 overs, making the outcome all but inevitable.

Opting to bowl under overcast Hamilton skies, Mohammad Rizwan hoped the green pitch would favour his seamers. But New Zealand’s openers, Rhys Mariu and Nick Kelly, had other ideas. Exploiting Pakistan’s early waywardness—eight wides in the first four overs—they raced out to a 50-run stand in just six overs. Akif Javed was taken for 23 off his first two overs as New Zealand surged ahead.

It was Haris Rauf who brought Pakistan back into the game, getting one to jag back in and induce an inside edge from Kelly. Moments later, Babar Azam showed sharp reflexes at slip to dismiss Mariu for 18. Despite the early losses, New Zealand were in a strong position at 97 for 2 in the 15th over.

That’s when Muqeem turned the tide. His spell of guile and control disrupted the Kiwi momentum, removing Mitchell with flight and having him stumped. Javed followed up with Nicholls trapped in front, and Pakistan tightened the screws, allowing just 25 runs between overs 15 and 25.

A brief controversy arose when Michael Bracewell appeared to nick one through to Rizwan, only for it to be given not out. The very next delivery, though, he edged again and this time there was no doubt. With the score at 146 for 6, Pakistan looked poised to bowl New Zealand out cheaply.

But Hay held firm. Anchoring the innings with maturity and calm, he guided the lower order to a competitive 292 for 8—just one short of a deserving century.

In reply, Pakistan’s top order imploded spectacularly. Sears ran riot, tearing through the batting lineup with figures of 5 for 59. Only Faheem Ashraf (73) and Naseem Shah (35) offered any resistance, but it wasn’t enough to stop a rampant New Zealand from sealing the series in style.
