Bangladesh recover emphatically from their warm-up collapse as Australia are dismissed for 198 before the visitors finish the day at 96 for 1

Bangladesh produced a remarkable turnaround in Darwin, recovering from their recent 54-run collapse in the warm-up match to seize control of the opening day of the Test against Australia.

Led by a career-best 6 for 55 from Hasan Mahmud, Bangladesh dismissed the hosts for just 198 before reaching 96 for 1 by stumps. They trail Australia by only 102 runs heading into the second day.

Mahmud leads a sensational pace attack

Hasan Mahmud was the standout performer, recording his best figures in Test cricket and repeatedly troubling Australia's batters with movement and disciplined lengths.

The Bangladesh quick received excellent support from Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain, who claimed two wickets apiece.

For only the second time in Bangladesh's Test history, their fast bowlers accounted for all ten wickets in an innings.

The pressure began from the opening exchanges. Taskin and Mahmud repeatedly attacked the area just outside off stump, forcing Australia's openers to play uncertainly.

Mahmud eventually removed Jake Weatherald, who edged an outswinger, before getting Travis Head to chop an inward-angling delivery onto his stumps.

Australia's top order struggles

Australia's highly rated batting line-up found the conditions difficult, particularly against Bangladesh's disciplined seamers.

Marnus Labuschagne managed only 20 deliveries before edging Ebadot Hossain to Najmul Hossain Shanto at second slip.

Ebadot celebrated the breakthrough with his trademark Air Force salute.

Bangladesh then struck again just before lunch when Cameron Green was caught at midwicket off Taskin Ahmed. Mushfiqur Rahim completed an excellent diving catch as Australia slipped to 74 for 4.

With the ball moving and Bangladesh maintaining relentless pressure, Australia's batting depth never fully recovered.

Smith stands alone

Amid Australia's collapse, Steven Smith provided the only substantial resistance.

Smith battled through 109 deliveries to make 71, attempting to rebuild the innings as wickets continued to fall around him.

However, without sustained support from the other end, his effort could not prevent Australia from being bowled out for 198.

Bangladesh batters respond impressively

Bangladesh's response was far more assured than their recent warm-up performance suggested.

Shadman Islam was the only batter dismissed, while Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque settled in during the evening session.

The pair put together an unbeaten 60-run partnership, facing almost 16 overs and steadily reducing Australia's advantage.

Both batters showed patience, leaving deliveries outside off stump and playing the ball late rather than chasing the movement.

Tanzid finished on 32, while Mominul was unbeaten on 35 at the close.

Bangladesh seize early advantage

At 96 for 1, Bangladesh trail by just 102 runs and have already put themselves in an excellent position after the opening day.

The performance is particularly significant given their disastrous 54 all out in the tour match only days earlier.

With their fast bowlers extracting movement and the top order showing discipline, Bangladesh have transformed the mood around the tour and will now look to build a first-innings lead on day two.
