Amy Satterthwaite takes charge of Canterbury Women as domestic coaching career enters new phase

Former New Zealand captain becomes the only woman leading a New Zealand domestic team this season, while Brendon Donkers and Heinrich Malan also take up new coaching roles

Former New Zealand captain Amy Satterthwaite has been appointed head coach of Canterbury Women, marking the next step in her transition from an accomplished playing career into coaching.

Satterthwaite will return to the team she represented for two decades and becomes the only female head coach of a New Zealand domestic side heading into the upcoming season.

She replaces Rhys Morgan, who spent six seasons in charge and guided Canterbury to two Super Smash titles, as well as the 2020-21 Hallyburton Johnstone Shield.

From Canterbury star to head coach

Satterthwaite last played for Canterbury in the 2022-23 season before moving further into coaching and development roles.

After retiring from international cricket in 2022, she joined the Adelaide Strikers as an assistant coach in the WBBL, her first significant coaching position.

She subsequently retired from domestic playing cricket and, in December last year, became Canterbury's female pathway lead.

The new appointment now gives her responsibility for the senior Canterbury women's team.

A remarkable Canterbury career

Satterthwaite finished her playing career as one of Canterbury's most decorated batters.

Across 20 years, she accumulated 5147 runs for the province, although Frankie Mackay has since surpassed her overall tally.

Satterthwaite remains Canterbury's leading run-scorer in T20 cricket, with 2925 runs.

At international level, she represented New Zealand in 145 ODIs and 111 T20Is, while playing a major role in the national team for 15 years.

One of her most remarkable achievements came in ODI cricket, where she became the only woman and only one of two players overall, alongside Kumar Sangakkara, to score centuries in four consecutive ODI innings.

Donkers takes over Canterbury men's team

There has also been a coaching change in Canterbury's men's programme.

Brendon Donkers has been confirmed as the full-time head coach of the defending Plunket Shield champions.

Donkers had previously worked as Peter Fulton's assistant before Fulton departed during the previous season to take charge of Middlesex.

Donkers subsequently served as Canterbury's interim head coach and has now been given the permanent position.

Malan returns to Central Districts

Another familiar face is returning to New Zealand domestic cricket, with Heinrich Malan appointed head coach of Central Districts on a three-year contract.

Malan returns after four years in charge of Ireland, replacing a coaching structure that previously saw Greg Hay oversee the four-day and one-day sides while Ben Smith handled the Super Smash team.

The 45-year-old has considerable experience with Central Districts, having previously guided them to titles in the Plunket Shield and Ford Trophy, as well as the 2019 Super Smash crown.

He also spent time coaching Auckland before taking the Ireland job.

Malan left his Ireland position shortly after leading them to a historic 2-0 T20I series victory over India.

He is now looking forward to returning to hands-on domestic coaching and working with a new generation of Central Districts players.

With Satterthwaite, Donkers and Malan all taking charge of New Zealand domestic teams, the upcoming season will feature several notable changes in the coaching landscape.
