Former Australia fast bowler Ryan Harris believes South Australia allrounder Nathan McAndrew should already have earned a Test cap following his outstanding performances in domestic cricket.
McAndrew starred in the Sheffield Shield final against Victoria, producing a Player-of-the-Match display that underlined his allround value. He scored 60 in a crucial 105-run partnership with Alex Carey to rescue South Australia from a precarious position, before contributing with the ball in both innings. His efforts helped secure back-to-back Shield titles for his side.
Harris was unequivocal in his assessment, stating that McAndrew has done enough over multiple seasons to warrant selection. “He probably should have already done it,” Harris said, pointing to his consistency and ability to contribute with both bat and ball.
Since moving to South Australia in 2021, McAndrew has been one of the most prolific bowlers in the Sheffield Shield. He has taken 181 wickets at an average of 23.52, including 11 five-wicket hauls, while also proving himself as a dependable lower-order batter.
Despite his strong record, McAndrew remains realistic about his chances of breaking into Australia’s Test side, which currently boasts a formidable pace attack. He acknowledged that opportunities may only arise through injuries but remains focused on performing consistently at the domestic level.
Opposition players have also praised McAndrew’s effectiveness, with Victoria captain Will Sutherland describing him as “relentless” and highly accurate, particularly challenging for left-handers.
With Australia facing a demanding schedule of Test matches in the coming months, McAndrew’s name is likely to remain in contention. Whether he earns a long-awaited call-up could depend on circumstances, but his recent performances have certainly strengthened his case.
