Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered another setback ahead of IPL 2026, with Dewald Brevis ruled out of their opening match against Rajasthan Royals due to a side strain.
Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that Brevis is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is expected to return soon, though he will miss the season opener in Guwahati on March 30.
Brevis’ absence further weakens a CSK squad already dealing with multiple injury concerns. Fast bowler Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the entire tournament, while veteran wicketkeeper MS Dhoni is likely to miss the first two weeks due to a calf strain. Their replacement signing Spencer Johnson is also unavailable for the initial phase as he continues his recovery from a back injury.
Brevis had emerged as a key middle-order hitter for CSK last season after joining as a replacement player. He impressed with 225 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 180, including 17 sixes, earning retention for IPL 2026. His absence leaves a gap in CSK’s power-hitting department.
In his place, Australian allrounder Matt Short is likely to slot into the middle order, while uncapped Indian players Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer could be in line for IPL debuts. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has already confirmed he will open alongside Sanju Samson, with options like Sarfaraz Khan and Urvil Patel providing flexibility in the batting lineup.
After finishing bottom of the table in 2025, CSK will be eager for a strong start this season. However, injuries to key players mean they will need their squad depth to step up immediately in IPL 2026.
