Hardik Pandya's shin injury rules him out of India A's series against Australia A

Hardik Pandya has been told to rest for two weeks after scans found a stress response in his right shin, ruling him out of India A's one-day series against Australia A

The India all-rounder has been diagnosed with a symptomatic right tibial bone stress response, an overuse injury to the shin bone. The BCCI Centre of Excellence medical team has confirmed there is no structural bone damage and no established stress fracture, and has prescribed two weeks of rest as a precaution.

The diagnosis, reported by Cricbuzz on 26 September, removes Pandya from the three one-day matches against Australia A scheduled for 6, 9 and 11 October in Puducherry, which were to be his return to competitive cricket.

Injuries of this type usually take four to six weeks to settle, a timeline that runs directly into India's white-ball tour of New Zealand.

What the scans found

A bone stress response sits a step short of a stress fracture. Repeated loading causes microscopic damage to the bone, and the pain arrives before the bone gives way, which is why the absence of a fracture on the scan matters as much as the diagnosis itself.

Seam-bowling all-rounders are among the most exposed to it. The forces that pass through the front leg in the delivery stride are absorbed over and over, and they are added to by running between the wickets and fielding.

Treatment is load reduction rather than a fixed layoff. Pandya will come off his feet for the rest period, then work back through running, bowling and match play in stages, with the rate of progress set by how the shin responds.

Out of the India A series

Pandya had been named in the India A squad announced on 9 September as a conditional selection, with his place dependent on fitness. That condition has now become a confirmed absence.

He has not played competitive cricket since IPL 2026, where he appeared in 10 of 14 matches. Reports say the pain returned during fielding drills at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru as he worked towards a return to play around 20 September.

India's squads for the current home series against the West Indies, announced earlier this month, do not include him.

New Zealand tour in the balance

India's next assignment after the West Indies is a white-ball tour of New Zealand, with the T20Is running from 22 October to 1 November and the ODIs from 4 to 15 November.

Counting from the diagnosis, the standard four-to-six-week recovery window closes around the start of that T20I leg at the earliest. A player returning from a bone stress injury also needs bowling loads built back up before he is match-ready, so the ODI half of the tour is the more realistic target.

What India lose in the meantime

Head coach Gautam Gambhir has been direct about the rarity of what Pandya offers. "Very few teams have a player like that who can bowl 10 overs for you, plus bat at number six or seven, plus with that impact. So the focus right now is just that," Gambhir told JioStar, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

He has also framed the problem as one of cricket played rather than fitness alone. "He needs game time as well. Because after the IPL he hasn't played a lot of cricket. So if the focus is only that he has to play the 50-over format, then he might be short of cricket," Gambhir said.

A long absence already

Pandya's last T20I was the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad in March 2026. His last ODI came further back still, at the Champions Trophy final in March 2025.

That gap is the reason the latest setback carries weight beyond one A-team series. India have a little over a year until the 2027 World Cup, and the all-rounder they have built their middle order and their sixth bowling option around has spent most of the current cycle out of the side.

Pandya will be reassessed at the end of the two-week rest period, with the New Zealand tour the first marker on the calendar for a return.
