Bavuma rebuilds after Hazlewood's first-ball strike in the Wanderers Pink ODI

South Africa lost Aiden Markram to the first ball of the match and still passed 175 inside 30 overs against Australia at the Wanderers

A captain's innings from Temba Bavuma steadied South Africa in the second ODI in Johannesburg, where the hosts reached 176 for 3 after 29 overs having been a wicket down before a run was scored.

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and put South Africa in, and Josh Hazlewood rewarded him immediately, removing Markram with the opening delivery of the innings.

South Africa lead the three-match series after winning the opener in Durban, so Australia must win here to take the contest to Potchefstroom on 30 September. Australia were beaten chasing in that first match on 24 September.

A wicket off the first ball

Hazlewood banged his first delivery in short of a length outside off stump and it climbed at Markram, who threw his hands at it. Cooper Connolly flung himself to his left at cover-point and took it one-handed.

Markram, who missed the Durban match for personal reasons, became only the sixth South African batter to be dismissed off the first ball of an ODI innings.

Hazlewood had a second soon after, Quinton de Kock caught behind by Alex Carey for 15 from 13 balls with the score on 36.

Bavuma holds the innings together

Bavuma answered the early loss by batting through the first hour, and by the 22nd over he had 57 not out from 71 balls with seven fours and a six.

He was given useful company by Matthew Breetzke, whose 34 from 28 balls contained six fours and took the second-wicket stand past fifty before Carey caught him off Jack Edwards to leave South Africa 93 for 3 in the 16th over.

David Miller then joined his captain and went at more than a run a ball, reaching 23 not out from 19 balls by the same point, with three fours and a six.

Australia work through their options

Marsh used seven bowlers inside 22 overs, a sign of how little control Australia found once the new ball had done its work on a true surface at altitude.

Hazlewood was the pick with 2-34 from five overs and Edwards the tidiest of the part-timers at 1-10 from three, while Xavier Bartlett conceded only 13 from his first four.

Adam Zampa took the heaviest treatment, going for 46 from his first five overs as Bavuma and Miller used the pace of the outfield.

Nathan Ellis went wicketless from his first three overs, and Marsh gave himself the option of Matt Renshaw's off spin as early as the 22nd over with the run rate sitting at six an over.

A depleted attack still to come

South Africa are missing much of their front-line pace for this series, with Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Ottneil Baartman all sidelined by hamstring trouble and Nandre Burger nursing a back injury.

That has opened the door for the young quicks Duan Jansen and Nqobani Mokoena, and left Keshav Maharaj's spin as the most experienced weapon Temba Bavuma has to call on.

Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Bjorn Fortuin and Maharaj were all still to bat as the innings passed the halfway mark.

Pink Day at the Wanderers

The match is South Africa's annual Pink ODI, played in an all-pink kit to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

The fixture has been staged at the Wanderers since 2013, inspired by the Jane McGrath Day the McGrath Foundation established in Sydney, and proceeds go to the breast care unit at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

Roughly R10 million has been raised for the unit since the day began.
