Peter Handscomb once again proved to be a thorn in Middlesex’s side, crafting a resilient 87 to steer Leicestershire to a competitive 274 on day two of their County Championship clash at Lord’s. The former Middlesex player, who had limited success during his stint with the hosts, marked his 100th first-class score of 50 or more in typically dogged fashion, anchoring key partnerships with Ian Holland (37) and Ben Green (36) in an attritional innings.

Despite a probing effort from Middlesex’s bowlers, highlighted by Zafar Gohar’s 4 for 34, Handscomb’s watchful innings kept Leicestershire marginally ahead. A missed stumping on 54 by keeper Jack Davies off Gohar and a rejected lbw appeal in the next ball allowed Handscomb to press on. The innings was not without chances—Sam Robson dropped Lewis Hill early, and debutant Naavya Sharma was denied a dream start because of it. But Middlesex fought back with late wickets, including Handscomb falling on 87, lofting Gohar to mid-on just as he looked set for a century.
