Gurnoor Brar's career-best four-for bowls New Zealand out for 134 in Wellington

New Zealand were dismissed for 134 inside 41 overs at Sky Stadium, leaving India 135 to chase for a 2-0 lead in the five-match series

Gurnoor Brar returned 4-30 from his 10 overs, the best figures of his one-day international career, as India bowled New Zealand out for 134 in the second ODI in Wellington on Saturday.

Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to chase on a morning that had already cost the match time, the contest cut to 47 overs a side after rain interrupted play for about an hour and a wet outfield delayed the start.

Only Daryl Mitchell passed 35 as the hosts lost wickets in clusters on a two-paced surface, and India need 135 from 47 overs to move 2-0 up.

Nabi removes both openers

Auqib Nabi struck in the second over, Tim Seifert caught at mid-on by Anshul Kamboj without scoring.

Nabi then found the outside edge of Will Young, who went for 6 with KL Rahul taking the catch behind the stumps, and New Zealand were 11 for 2 inside six overs.

Kamboj bowled Henry Nicholls for 11 to leave the hosts 23 for 3 inside nine overs.

Under the revised playing conditions the first powerplay ran to the 10th over, the second from the 11th to the 38th and the last from the 39th, with two bowlers permitted 10 overs each and the rest nine.

New Zealand managed only 29 runs by the end of that first block, and the pressure never properly lifted.

Brar's double strike in the 20th over

Brar removed Tom Latham for 7 and Glenn Phillips for a duck in the same over.

That left New Zealand 53 for 5 in the 20th, half the side gone and the innings yet to produce a partnership worth the name.

Mitchell and Santner rebuild briefly

Daryl Mitchell provided the innings' only resistance of substance, batting through the middle overs for 55 from 104 balls with five fours and two sixes.

It was patient rather than fluent, and for a time it looked like carrying New Zealand towards a defendable total.

He found a partner in Mitchell Santner, who counter-attacked for 31 from 38 balls, and the pair added 59 for the sixth wicket, comfortably the biggest stand of the innings.

Axar Patel broke it in the 35th over, Mitchell holing out to Kamboj at long-off with the total on 112.

The tail folds for 22

Brar returned to have Santner caught behind by Rahul, and Axar bowled Kyle Jamieson for 7.

Brar picked up Nathan Smith in the 40th over before Kamboj bowled Blair Tickner for 2 in the 41st to close the innings.

The last four wickets fell for 22 runs inside six overs, leaving New Zealand without the lower-order runs that might have made the target awkward in a shortened chase.

A second successive collapse

It is the second time in this series New Zealand have been bowled out for under 200, following their 185 in the opening match at Auckland.

Each of India's four wicket-takers finished with at least two: Kamboj 2-25, Axar 2-28 and Nabi 2-31 behind Brar's four.

The hosts were dismissed for 185 in 40.2 overs at Eden Park in that opener, and have now been bowled out inside their allotted overs in both matches of the series.

India won that first match by five wickets on the DLS method, Virat Kohli making 74 from 51 balls before rain shaped the finish.

India's target of 135 from 47 overs asks for a required rate of under three an over, the sort of chase that would take them 2-0 up with three to play.

Scorecard: New Zealand 134 all out in 41 overs (Daryl Mitchell 55, Mitchell Santner 31; Gurnoor Brar 4-30, Anshul Kamboj 2-25, Axar Patel 2-28, Auqib Nabi 2-31). India need 135 from 47 overs.
