Wareham's unbeaten 73 and a record-equalling stand carry the Renegades past the Strikers

Georgia Wareham's unbeaten 73 from 31 balls and an unbroken stand of 109 with Courtney Webb carried the Melbourne Renegades to a 36-run win over the Adelaide Strikers at Junction Oval

The Renegades reached 188 for 3, the third-highest total in the club's history and their best in five years, after the Strikers won the toss and chose to bowl. Adelaide were held to 152 for 8 in reply.

Wareham was named player of the match. Her 73 not out was her highest score in the Women's Big Bash League, and she also claimed a wicket as the chase fell away.

It is the Renegades' second win in four days, and the second time this season that Wareham has been at the centre of a record Renegades partnership.

Matthews sets the tone at the top

Opening batter Hayley Matthews gave the innings its shape with 49 from 32 balls, keeping the Renegades ahead of the rate through the first half of the innings.

Wareham pointed to that start as the foundation of the win when she spoke afterwards, crediting Matthews with setting the total up before the later hitting took over.

Matthews was one of the three wickets to fall, and Wareham and Webb were together when the 20 overs ran out.

A record-equalling stand

Wareham and Webb put on 109 from 58 balls without being parted, equalling the highest partnership in Renegades history.

Wareham already held a share of that record. She made 62 from 39 balls with Nicole Faltum in Perth earlier this season, in a match the Renegades lost to the Scorchers.

The pair took 23 runs from their power surge, and Wareham reached her fifty from 22 balls. Later in the innings she hit three successive sixes off fellow legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington in an over that cost 24.

Webb finished on 52 from 42 balls at the other end.

Bouchier's half-century is not enough

Set 189 to win, the Strikers began well, putting on 67 in 8.3 overs for the first wicket.

Emma de Broughe was run out for 27 off 24 balls in a mix-up with Maia Bouchier, and the wickets came steadily from there.

Bouchier made 54 from 38 balls before falling to leave Adelaide 94 for 3 after 12.1 overs, still 95 short of their target with 47 balls to come.

Nothing in the rest of the innings restored the tempo of that opening partnership, and five more wickets fell before the 20 overs were up.

Vlaeminck's double-wicket maiden

Any remaining doubt went in the 17th over, the second of the Strikers' power surge, when Tayla Vlaeminck bowled a double-wicket maiden.

The Australia fast bowler is back after a year and a half out of the game, having dislocated a shoulder at the 2024 Twenty20 World Cup.

The power surge is the phase a chasing side picks for its own scoring, and the Strikers took no runs at all from that over.

Wareham's praise for a returning quick

"It's awesome to see Tayla out there charging in, trying to bowl as fast as she can every ball, which is pretty cool to have in your side," Wareham said.

"She's out there scaring batters and running in and bowling as quick as she can, which is exactly what we want as a team. To have such control is massive, and after a massive break out of the game is even more special."

Scorecard: Melbourne Renegades Women 188 for 3 (Wareham 73*, Webb 52*, Matthews 49) beat Adelaide Strikers Women 152 for 8 (Bouchier 54, de Broughe 27) by 36 runs at Junction Oval.
