Gladiators bowlers flip the script to defend 142 against Kings

A sensational bowling turnaround from Quetta Gladiators saw them edge out Karachi Kings by five runs, successfully defending a modest total of 142 — the lowest ever defended at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore during the PSL. The Kings seemed comfortably placed at 75 for 1 after eight overs, needing just 68 runs from 72 balls, but a relentless bowling display from Gladiators triggered a collapse, with Kings managing only 27 runs and losing five wickets over the next eight overs.

Initially, Karachi appeared to be cruising, with Tim Seifert leading the charge. Although Mohammad Amir dismissed David Warner in the opening over, Seifert and James Vince quickly seized momentum. Vince attacked Amir’s second over, while Seifert dominated Khurram Shahzad and hammered 19 runs off Faheem Ashraf in a single over.

However, the game turned sharply when Saud Shakeel brought himself into the attack and immediately dismissed Vince with a well-executed over. Shan Masood, who replaced him, struggled severely, laboring to 9 off 17 balls before falling, while Seifert holed out against Mohammad Wasim.

Abrar Ahmed, who had bowled tightly all innings, finally claimed a deserved wicket when Khushdil Shah edged a googly to slip. Abrar finished with just 15 runs conceded in his four overs, tightening the noose around Karachi as the required rate climbed over eight an over. Exceptional fielding and catching further amplified Gladiators' control.

The Kings never recovered. Amir returned to bounce out Mohammad Nabi, while Khurram Shahzad trapped Abbas Afridi lbw. With the tail exposed, even a late flurry from Hasan Ali wasn't enough to revive the chase, and Gladiators wrapped up a dramatic two points.

Earlier, after opting to bowl first, Kings seemed to have laid the groundwork for a straightforward win. Hasan Ali, in imperious form, ripped through the Gladiators’ top order, dismissing Finn Allen, Saud Shakeel, and Rilee Rossouw in quick succession. Mark Chapman and Kusal Mendis also fell cheaply, with Mendis’s inventive 36 off 22 a rare bright spot.

It was a gritty partnership between Hasan Nawaz and Faheem Ashraf that gave Gladiators a lifeline. Their stand of 59 from 47 balls, particularly Faheem’s aggressive 43 off 27, lifted the total beyond 140 — a score that appeared insufficient but ultimately proved decisive thanks to Gladiators' remarkable resilience.

What seemed destined to be a case of heroic failure from Faheem turned into the catalyst for a memorable triumph.
