Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has made it clear he enters IPL 2026 with nothing to prove individually, insisting his focus remains solely on team success while also voicing strong criticism of the Impact Player rule.
Gill, who has been one of the most consistent performers in the IPL over the past few seasons, said his record speaks for itself. “I don’t think I have anything to prove this season,” he stated, pointing to his run tally since 2020, which is the highest among all batters in the league. After scoring 650 runs in IPL 2025 and guiding Gujarat Titans to the playoffs, Gill believes consistency, not validation, is the priority.
Despite a fluctuating T20I journey with India—where he was dropped ahead of the T20 World Cup after a lean run—Gill remains unfazed. He reiterated that personal milestones are secondary, with his primary ambition being to lead Gujarat Titans to another IPL title.
“My goal starts and ends with the team winning,” Gill said, underlining his leadership mindset ahead of the new season, which begins on March 31 against Punjab Kings.
However, Gill was outspoken about the Impact Player rule, introduced in 2023, arguing that it diminishes the traditional balance of the game. He believes allowing teams to field an extra batter makes matches “more one-dimensional” and reduces the skill required to navigate challenging situations.
“Cricket is an 11-player game,” he said, adding that the rule removes the challenge of rebuilding innings under pressure. According to Gill, chasing modest targets on difficult pitches is far more engaging than high-scoring contests enabled by deeper batting line-ups.
While acknowledging the rule’s entertainment value, Gill expressed hope that decision-makers may reconsider it in the future.
For now, though, his focus remains clear—winning matches and chasing IPL glory with Gujarat Titans.
