Gambhir urges shift from personal milestones to team trophies after India’s T20 World Cup triumph

India men’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has called for a change in how success is measured in Indian cricket, urging players and fans to celebrate team trophies rather than individual milestones. Speaking after India’s latest T20 World Cup triumph, Gambhir said the focus must remain on collective achievements instead of personal records such as centuries.
India have enjoyed a highly successful period under Gambhir, winning two ICC titles and an Asia Cup, including last year’s Champions Trophy and the recent T20 World Cup. The former opener said the team’s philosophy is built around putting the team ahead of individual glory.
“For too long in Indian cricket we have spoken about milestones,” Gambhir said. “I hope that while I am here we stop celebrating milestones and start celebrating trophies, because that is the bigger purpose of a team sport.”
Gambhir pointed to the approach of wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson as an example of the team-first mindset. Samson scored 97 not out, 89 and 89 in his last three innings of the tournament. In both the semi-final and the final he was close to a century but continued attacking instead of slowing down to reach the landmark, helping India post totals above 250.
The coach also dedicated the victory to former head coach Rahul Dravid, who guided India to the 2024 T20 World Cup, as well as VVS Laxman for his work at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. Gambhir also praised chief selector Ajit Agarkar for his role in building a deep and flexible squad.
According to Gambhir, India’s strength lies in the depth of talent available, allowing the team to experiment with different combinations throughout the tournament.
He said his long-term vision is to create a fearless Indian side capable of consistently outscoring opponents and competing for major titles without worrying about individual records.
