Hasan Mahmud's six-for bowls West Indies out for 356 but Bangladesh slip in reply

Hasan Mahmud took six wickets to close out the West Indies first innings at 356 in Sylhet, but Bangladesh lost three of their own before the day was done
Hasan Mahmud finished with 6-90 as West Indies were bowled out for 356 in 106.4 overs on the second day of the second Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. It was his fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket and the first he has taken at home.
The reward was smaller than the effort. Bangladesh reached 77 for 3 in reply, still 279 runs behind and 79 short of the mark they need to avoid the follow-on.
The day cost them their senior opener as well. Shadman Islam, who made 105 in the first Test at Mirpur, was carried off on a stretcher after twisting his left ankle in the field and was sent for an MRI scan.
West Indies add 121 for the last six
Resuming on 235 for 4, West Indies lost their last six wickets for 121 runs. Amir Jangoo took his overnight innings to 133 from 212 balls, with 13 fours and two sixes, before Hasan bowled him with a length ball that clipped the top of off stump.
Roston Chase went first ball, caught behind by Litton Das, and the innings never found its shape again. West Indies were 322 for 8 at lunch.
The tail still cost Bangladesh. Jomel Warrican finished unbeaten on 27 from 48 balls and added 33 for the last wicket with Jayden Seales, who made 15 from 38 before Mehidy Hasan Miraz trapped him lbw to end the innings.
Two in two with the second new ball
Hasan's decisive spell came with the second new ball, when Jangoo and Chase fell to successive deliveries.
The review system denied him the hat-trick. Joshua Bishop was given out to the next ball, but the replay showed an inside edge on to the pad and the decision was overturned.
Bishop survived to make 23 before Litton stumped him with the total on 297 — the first time a Bangladesh fast bowler has taken a Test wicket by stumping.
Hasan had the last word after the interval, bowling Shamar Joseph for 16 with the first ball after lunch.
A fifth five-for, and a first at home
The six-wicket haul was Hasan's fifth five-wicket return in Tests, and the first he has taken in Bangladesh. He has now taken five in an innings in five different countries.
Taskin Ahmed finished with 2-83 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took two, including the wicket that ended the innings. Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan went wicketless.
Kevin Wickham, on debut, had made 61 on the opening day in a 131-run stand with Jangoo, and Justin Greaves 51.
Shadman carried from the field
Shadman went down in the 78th over chasing a ball towards the fine-leg boundary, and was treated on the ground before being stretchered off.
"Shadman suffered a left ankle twist. He is under observation. We will send him for an MRI scan," physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said.
Nayeem Hasan opened in his place and made 5 before Seales had him caught at slip. Jaker Ali fielded as substitute.
Bangladesh batting to stay in the series
Bangladesh were 36 for 2 at tea, with Najmul Hossain Shanto on 11 and Towhid Hridoy on 4, before moving on to 77 for 3.
West Indies lead the two-match World Test Championship series 1-0 after their eight-wicket win in Mirpur, where Roston Chase took 5-36.
That leaves the tourists needing only to avoid defeat in Sylhet to take a series in Bangladesh, and Bangladesh needing a long innings to keep the match alive.
Scorecard: West Indies 356 all out in 106.4 overs (Amir Jangoo 133, Kevin Wickham 61, Justin Greaves 51; Hasan Mahmud 6-90, Taskin Ahmed 2-83); Bangladesh 77 for 3.
