Gaikwad Backs Young CSK Core Despite Playoff Exit as Dhoni’s Future Remains Uncertain

Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad described IPL 2026 as an important “transition phase” for the franchise and said he was proud of the team’s fight despite narrowly missing out on the playoffs after their heavy defeat to Gujarat Titans.

CSK ended their campaign with six wins and eight losses, remaining in playoff contention until their final league match. Gaikwad admitted the season began poorly with three consecutive defeats, but felt the side recovered strongly before injuries disrupted their momentum at a crucial stage.

According to Gaikwad, injuries to allrounders Jamie Overton and Ramakrishna Ghosh unsettled the team balance in the closing stages of the tournament. CSK lost their final three matches after previously winning six of eight games during the middle phase of the season.

The skipper also emphasized that the squad is far younger and less experienced than many people believe. He pointed out that several members of the current squad have played fewer than 20 IPL games, making the season a valuable learning experience for the franchise’s next generation.

Gaikwad reserved special praise for emerging talents such as Kartik Sharma, Urvil Patel and Dewald Brevis, while also acknowledging that CSK are still adapting after moving on from experienced campaigners like Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu.

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the franchise remains the future of MS Dhoni, who did not play a single match this season because of injury concerns. Gaikwad admitted Dhoni’s absence was deeply felt, especially in pressure situations where his presence alone could influence games.

CSK bowling coach Eric Simons revealed Dhoni was still striking the ball exceptionally well in training despite battling a leg injury. Simons added that Dhoni would make any decision about continuing his career solely in the best interests of the team rather than for personal reasons.

Despite another season without a playoff appearance, CSK believe the experience gained by their younger core could help lay the foundation for a stronger comeback next year.
