From Punjab to Australia: Nikhil Chaudhary's Remarkable International Journey

India-born allrounder Nikhil Chaudhary has received his first call-up to Australia's T20I squad, replacing the rested Travis Head for the upcoming series against Bangladesh.

The 30-year-old leg-spinning allrounder, who currently represents Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes, has been rewarded after three impressive seasons in Australian domestic cricket and the Big Bash League.

Originally from Punjab, Chaudhary represented the state between 2017 and 2019, featuring in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. He travelled to Australia in 2020 to visit family before the COVID-19 pandemic led to international border closures, ultimately beginning a new chapter in his cricketing career.

Despite not yet holding Australian citizenship, Chaudhary qualifies to represent Australia under ICC eligibility regulations, having completed the required residency period. His current visa remains valid until 2027.

Chaudhary's rise has been remarkable. After being spotted in Brisbane grade cricket by former Hobart Hurricanes bowling coach James Hopes, he established himself as a key figure for the Hurricanes and played an important role in their 2024-25 Big Bash League title-winning campaign.

His success extended into domestic cricket, where he registered his maiden Sheffield Shield century and a five-wicket haul for Tasmania, further strengthening his credentials.

Australian selector Tony Dodemaide praised Chaudhary's performances, stating that he had been monitored closely for some time and impressed selectors with his consistent BBL displays. Chaudhary was also involved with the Delhi Capitals setup during IPL 2026.

Having already trained with Australia's squad before their recent tour of Pakistan, Chaudhary now has the opportunity to push for an international debut during the Bangladesh T20I series.

His selection marks a significant milestone in an unconventional cricketing journey that has taken him from Punjab's domestic circuit to the brink of representing Australia on the international stage.
