Former Australian opener Keith Stackpole passes away at 84

Keith Stackpole, the former Australian opener and revered figure in cricket, has passed away at the age of 84. Over the course of a distinguished career, Stackpole represented Australia in 43 Test matches, scoring seven centuries and leaving a lasting mark on the game.

Debuting in 1966 against England as a middle-order batter and leg-spinner, Stackpole transitioned to the top of the order in 1969, forming a formidable opening partnership with Bill Lawry. He registered his first Test century in Cape Town against South Africa, while his highest score—207—came against England at the Gabba in 1970.

Stackpole reserved some of his finest performances for the Ashes. He averaged an impressive 55.21 against England, with three of his seven Test centuries coming in the iconic rivalry. As Ian Chappell's vice-captain in the 1972 Ashes, he was Australia’s leading run-scorer with 485 runs at 53.88, earning him a place among Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 1973.

His Test career came to an end in 1974 in Auckland, memorably dismissed on the first ball of the match by a full toss—a moment he later recalled with trademark humor.

Stackpole also took part in history when he played in the first-ever One Day International in January 1971 at the MCG, taking 3 for 40 with the ball. His contribution to the sport was recognized with an MBE in 1974 for services to cricket. In first-class cricket, he amassed 10,100 runs and took 148 wickets.

Beyond his playing days, Stackpole became a respected voice in the game, enjoying a successful career as a television and radio commentator. His insight and charisma made him a cherished figure both on and off the field.

Stackpole’s courage, cricketing intellect, and commitment to the game have cemented his place as one of Australian cricket’s enduring icons.
