‘There’s Just Something About Her’: Flintoff’s Central Contract Reflects Faith Beyond Stats

Australia’s selectors have shown their eye on the future by awarding a central contract to allrounder Tess Flintoff—despite modest numbers—marking a bold call to “future-proof” the national squad.

Flintoff, still uncapped at international level, was the most eye-catching inclusion in the 18-player contracted list. She becomes the first player since Beth Mooney and Grace Harris in 2015–16 to earn a women's central contract without yet making her debut.

The 21-year-old’s recent figures hardly demand selection—three wickets in nine WBBL games for Melbourne Stars and eight wickets at 59.25 in the WNCL for Victoria. But a strong finish to the season, highlighted by a five-wicket haul in a four-day match for Australia A against England A, helped her case.

"Looking at her numbers, you’d understandably ask, why?" national selector Shawn Flegler acknowledged. "She hasn't made an undeniable case with wickets or runs, but there's something about her. Selection isn’t just about stats—sometimes it's about spotting something extra, and we believe Tess has that."

Flintoff, who gained attention with a blistering 16-ball fifty in the 2022 WBBL at age 19, had a quiet season with the bat this year but showed signs of form late in the WNCL. She has previously toured with the Australian squad as injury cover, including the 2023 Ireland tour, and has been a regular fixture for Australia A.

Flegler explained the decision as part of a longer-term strategy, particularly with two major white-ball tournaments on the horizon.

"She’s an exciting allrounder who swings the ball in at decent pace, hits the ball hard, and is outstanding in the field," he said. "We’re trying to build a squad not just for now but for what’s coming—a World Cup later this year and another T20 World Cup next June."

Flintoff’s selection is part of a broader generational shift within the national setup. Fellow young talent Georgia Voll also earned her first full-time contract after a breakout debut season, while wicketkeeper Nicole Faltum and allrounder Charli Knott were included in the T20I squad for the recent New Zealand tour.

Knott, who captained Australia A to a thrilling red-ball win over England A with scores of 52 and 123 before taking the match-winning wicket, remains firmly in the frame for future opportunities. While she narrowly missed out on a contract, selectors confirmed she’s still in their plans.

“Charli had an excellent season and finished strongly,” Flegler said. “She might feel unlucky not to be in the 18, but she’s very much in the mix.”

As for players on the comeback trail, Flegler provided updates on a few key names. Sophie Molineux is on track to return in time for the ODI World Cup in September after missing recent tours due to a knee injury. Tayla Vlaeminck, meanwhile, is aiming for a WBBL return in November, with the 2026 T20 World Cup seen as a realistic international comeback target. However, she could come into consideration for the India and West Indies series early next year if her recovery progresses well.
