Axar Patel on Captaincy: ‘I’m Not Following a Template – I Back My Instincts’

If captaincy success is measured by results, Axar Patel is right at the top in IPL 2025. In his first season leading an IPL side, Axar has steered Delhi Capitals (DC) to five wins in six matches — and he’s doing it his own way.

Speaking after DC’s dramatic Super Over win against Rajasthan Royals, Axar revealed that much of his leadership success comes down to trusting his instincts.

"I’m not following a set template," he said. "I’m doing what I feel is right — both on and off the field. I’m enjoying myself, and I believe when you enjoy what you’re doing, you perform better."

While Axar leans on gut calls, he isn’t ignoring preparation and data altogether. He explained that while matchups and planning are part of the strategy, he often adapts based on the moment.

"I do use data, but I don’t follow it blindly," he said. "Sometimes a player is in form, or the game situation demands something different. I weigh the options — if something feels 60-40 or 70-30 in our favor, I’ll go with that."

Owning the Decisions — Win or Lose

Axar also spoke candidly about handling mistakes.

"I don’t see decisions that don’t work out as mistakes," he said. "You make a tactical call, sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. If it fails, I’ll own it, but I won’t second-guess the intent."

He emphasized creating a relaxed yet respectful team atmosphere.

"I want the environment to be fun and friendly, but with a clear understanding that winning comes first," he added. "It’s about finding that balance — enjoying the game, but staying focused."

Finger Injury Limiting Bowling Impact

Axar has bowled just 17 overs in six games, with only one wicket — which came against RR — and revealed he’s managing a finger injury.

"I got a cut during the Champions Trophy, and the skin hasn’t fully healed," he explained. "I only bowl when I feel the team really needs me."

He also admitted it has affected his ability to apply pressure with the ball, though he feels confident in his execution.

Flexible with the Bat

Axar has batted in multiple positions this season — No. 4, 5, and 6 — adjusting based on matchups and team balance. In the RR game, he scored a rapid 34 off 14 balls from No. 6.

"It’s not about promoting myself — it’s about what the team needs," he said. "I sent Stubbs in ahead of me to maintain the right-left combo. I was clear in my mind who to attack and avoided unnecessary risks."

Despite not yet making a major impact with the bat this season, Axar remains confident, citing some over-aggressive dismissals but believes he's striking the ball well.

With DC flying high under his leadership, Axar’s relaxed yet calculated approach is turning heads — and proving that sometimes, trusting your gut can be the smartest tactic of all.
