Firing MI climb to third as Boult and Rohit dismantle SRH

Mumbai Indians (MI) continued their surge up the IPL 2025 table with a dominant seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday, completing a season double over the struggling side. After stifling SRH on a sluggish Wankhede pitch last week, MI replicated their performance in Hyderabad, restricting the hosts to 143 for 8 before chasing the target with 26 balls to spare.

The victory, MI's fourth on the trot after a slow start to the season, lifted them to third in the standings. Meanwhile, SRH, with just two wins from eight matches, remain second from bottom and took another hit to their net run rate, now at -1.361.

Boult and Chahar Rip Through SRH

The tone was set early by MI's new-ball pair, Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, who claimed two wickets each to reduce SRH to 24 for 4—the lowest powerplay total this season. SRH's top-order collapse was aided by poor shot selection on a surface offering grip and variable bounce, as batters repeatedly fell trying to force the pace.

The collapse continued when Hardik Pandya’s short ball got big on Aniket Verma, leaving SRH reeling at 35 for 5. From there, Heinrich Klaasen and Impact Player Abhinav Manohar staged a spirited recovery, adding 99 off 63 balls for the sixth wicket. Klaasen was the standout, hammering 71 off 44 in a knock laced with intelligent shot-making and controlled aggression—highlighted by a reverse-scooped six off Jasprit Bumrah.

Still, Klaasen's brilliance couldn’t salvage a competitive total, and SRH's innings ended with a whimper. Mitchell Santner applied the brakes in the middle overs with 1 for 19, while Boult returned to finish with a double strike in the final over, including a rare hit-wicket dismissal of Manohar.

Rohit Leads the Charge

In pursuit of 144, MI stumbled early as Jaydev Unadkat, recalled in place of an out-of-form Mohammed Shami, dismissed Ryan Rickelton in the second over. But conditions improved under lights, and Rohit Sharma wasted no time capitalizing.

Rohit, continuing his return to form, smashed 70 off 39 balls, his second consecutive fifty. He set the tone during the powerplay, launching Pat Cummins and Unadkat for clean sixes en route to MI’s 56 for 1 in the first six overs. His innings, marked by crisp strokeplay and effortless timing, carried MI to the brink of victory before he fell to Eshan Malinga in the 15th over.

Suryakumar Yadav then finished the job with clinical precision, ending unbeaten on 40 off 19. His boundary-laced cameo included the final blow—a pull shot mishandled at deep square leg to cap off MI’s emphatic win.
