Paul Farbrace has announced he will step down as head coach of Sussex at the end of the 2026 season, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the club ahead of their County Championship campaign.
Farbrace, who took charge in 2022, has overseen a strong turnaround on the field. His tenure included Sussex’s promotion to Division One as champions in 2024 and a run to T20 Finals Day the same year. Despite that progress, mounting off-field challenges have cast a shadow over the club.
Earlier this year, Sussex were placed under special measures by the ECB after reporting a £1.33 million loss in their 2024/25 accounts. The club was docked 12 Championship points and entered a three-year financial recovery plan under the governing body’s Exceptional Funding Policy.
The situation has been compounded by administrative instability. Former chief executive Pete Fitzboydon stepped down last year, and the club is yet to appoint a permanent replacement. Farbrace’s decision now removes another key figure from the leadership structure.
“I felt it was important to give the club clarity now as it plans for the future,” Farbrace said, while confirming he will remain fully committed for the remainder of the season.
Club president Rod Aldridge acknowledged the significance of the decision but expressed support for Farbrace, while interim CEO Mark West praised his contribution in guiding the team through a period of progress.
Despite the uncertainty, Farbrace has urged the squad to focus on the immediate challenge, having previously described the upcoming season as a “now or never” opportunity to push for a County Championship title.
However, with financial constraints expected to impact player retention and squad depth, Sussex face a challenging period both on and off the field as they prepare for life beyond Farbrace.
