Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders head into their IPL 2026 clash at Eden Gardens with a shared concern—underperforming bowling attacks in what promises to be another run-heavy contest.
Both teams come off games where they conceded 200-plus totals despite posting big scores themselves, exposing vulnerabilities with the ball. On a batting-friendly Eden surface, those concerns are only likely to be magnified.
KKR’s issues stem from both personnel and form. Their pace attack—featuring names like Vaibhav Arora and Blessing Muzarabani—lacked penetration in the opener, while allrounder Cameron Green is unlikely to contribute with the ball. More concerning, however, was the ineffectiveness of their spin duo Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, traditionally their biggest strength.
Despite that, history offers hope. Narine holds the record for most T20 wickets at Eden Gardens, while Chakravarthy has also enjoyed success at the venue. A return to familiar conditions could revive their impact.
SRH face a different but equally pressing issue: a one-dimensional bowling unit. With Brydon Carse unlikely to feature due to injury, their attack leans heavily on variations through Jaydev Unadkat, Harshal Patel and David Payne. That lack of express pace could be exploited on a ground known for big hitting.
Their batting, however, remains formidable. Players like Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan are particularly strong against spin, posing a direct challenge to KKR’s main weapons.
KKR hold a dominant head-to-head record, but with both bowling units under pressure, this contest may ultimately be decided by which attack can hold its nerve—even marginally—on a surface expected to produce another avalanche of runs.
