England vs India Test Series Renamed the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy

James Anderson expressed immense pride at being permanently linked to one of Test cricket’s marquee rivalries, as the ECB and BCCI confirmed the renaming of the England-India Test series to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The new title honors two of the longest-serving and most iconic players in the history of the game: James Anderson, the highest wicket-taking fast bowler in Tests, and Sachin Tendulkar, the format’s all-time leading run-scorer.

The change replaces the Pataudi Trophy, which had been contested in England since 2007. The inaugural edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will be the five-match series starting June 20, 2025, at Headingley, with an official unveiling ceremony expected at the World Test Championship final at Lord’s this week. Anderson described the gesture as a "huge honour," especially to be paired with someone he admired growing up. The two legends played 14 Tests against each other from 2006 to 2012, during which Anderson dismissed Tendulkar nine times — the joint-most by any bowler.

Tendulkar retired with 200 Test appearances and 15,921 runs, both records. Anderson, who retired after claiming 704 wickets in 188 Tests, picked up 149 of those wickets against India — more than he managed against any other side. His milestones include his 700th wicket, fittingly achieved against India during his final overseas Test in Dharamsala in March 2024.

Anderson reflected on memorable highs, such as England’s win in Mumbai in 2006 and series victories both home and away, as well as tough tours of India, which he called one of the most challenging places to play. He also highlighted the excitement around the upcoming series, noting the transitions in both teams, including India’s new leadership under Shubman Gill and the retirement of veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

The renaming follows a broader trend in Test cricket — such as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (India vs Australia) and the recently introduced Crowe-Thorpe Trophy (England vs New Zealand) — aimed at celebrating the legacy of legends who shaped the history of the game.
