England’s rising spin star Shoaib Bashir looks set to depart Somerset at the end of the current county season, seeking more consistent domestic playing time to complement his growing international career. Despite establishing himself as England’s first-choice spinner across the last 15 Test matches—including a player-of-the-match performance in a recent win over Zimbabwe—Bashir has struggled to break into Somerset’s Championship XI, where competition from Jack Leach’s left-arm spin and the all-round capabilities of Archie Vaughan has limited his appearances. In 2023, Bashir managed only four County Championship games and a single 50-over outing for Somerset before being loaned to Worcestershire. This summer, a short-term loan to Glamorgan resulted in just two wickets from three matches, and he has not featured in Somerset’s T20 Blast squad. Although he signed a two-year contract extension last year, there have been no discussions regarding a further renewal, and with the county transfer window now open, Bashir—currently on an ECB central contract—is free to explore opportunities with other counties. Former England spinner Graeme Swann, who has worked with Bashir in the Lions setup, has openly advocated for his move away from Somerset, calling it “bonkers” that the country’s top spinner is not playing regular county cricket. Surrey, where Bashir played youth cricket, is seen as a logical destination, while Warwickshire and Worcestershire have also been mentioned as potential suitors. Any new club would likely sign Bashir on a ‘shadow’ contract due to his central deal with the ECB, meaning he would only draw a salary from the county if that contract is not renewed. In parallel, Surrey is considering Adam Zampa as a short-term T20 replacement, and Australia’s Todd Murphy is expected to join an unnamed county for a four-game Championship spell this summer.
