Dhoni Urges CSK to Reflect Deeply After Fifth Consecutive Defeat in IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stand-in captain MS Dhoni has called for introspection after the team suffered their fifth straight defeat in IPL 2025. CSK were comprehensively beaten by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by eight wickets, with the chase of 104 completed in under 11 overs.

"I think quite a few nights haven’t gone our way," Dhoni said in a post-match interview. "What’s important is to look deep within. The challenge was there, but it’s crucial to accept that, figure out how to handle tough deliveries, and then work on getting runs on the board. Today, we simply didn’t have enough."

His comments came after CSK registered their lowest-ever total at Chepauk—just 103—following Dhoni’s decision to bat first after five consecutive games chasing. However, the tactical shift failed to change their fortunes.

The pitch posed challenges from the outset. KKR seamer Vaibhav Arora extracted movement early, troubling left-handed openers Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway, while Moeen Ali managed to get turn as early as the second over. The ball often stopped on the surface, contributing to misjudged shots and a slow powerplay, with CSK crawling to 31 for 2 before the innings further collapsed.

"Yes, the ball did stop a bit, but that’s been the case here," Dhoni acknowledged. "Even when we bowled first in previous games, it held up slightly in the second innings too. But losing too many wickets changes the complexion—it pressures incoming batters, and quality spin makes things even tougher. We couldn’t build any partnerships, and that made it harder."

CSK’s 103 is now their third-lowest total in IPL history, and their loss to KKR marked their biggest defeat by balls remaining in the league, surpassing a 2020 loss to Mumbai Indians when 46 balls remained. This time, KKR chased the target with 59 balls to spare.

This is also the first time CSK have lost three consecutive games at home in a single season.

Dhoni emphasized that applying themselves better and forming key partnerships could help the team get back on track. He pointed to the need for smarter powerplay batting, without chasing par scores of other teams blindly.

"Conditions matter," he said when asked about the team’s sluggish starts. "There have been a couple of games where we’ve done decently. What’s important is to stick to your strengths. Our openers need to back themselves and play proper cricketing shots—we’re not the team that starts slogging. You don’t need to panic looking at the scoreboard. One or two boundaries and the run rate picks up. But targeting 60 in six overs with our line-up puts a lot of pressure. If we lose early wickets, the middle order has to shoulder the burden, and the final-over slog never materialises."

Despite the string of losses, CSK are not at the bottom of the IPL points table. They currently sit ninth, just above Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), by virtue of a slightly better net run rate.
