CSK Break 180-Plus Chase Jinx as Urvil Patel Equals IPL Fastest Fifty Record

Chennai Super Kings finally ended a long-running IPL chase problem as they successfully chased a target of more than 180 for the first time after 14 straight failed attempts. Their win over Lucknow Super Giants in Chennai was powered by a breathtaking innings from Urvil Patel, who produced one of the fastest knocks in IPL history.

Urvil reached his half-century in just 13 balls, equalling Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for the fastest fifty in the IPL. Across all T20 cricket, only seven half-centuries have been quicker, showing just how special his innings was.

Before this match, CSK had lost 14 consecutive games while chasing targets above 180. Their last successful chase of such a total had come back in 2018 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, when they chased down 206. This victory, therefore, marked a major breakthrough for the team.

The match also produced a record-breaking powerplay at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. CSK and LSG together scored 188 runs in the first six overs of their innings, the highest powerplay aggregate for any IPL match in Chennai. LSG scored 91 in their powerplay, their highest ever in the IPL, while CSK replied with 97, their second-highest powerplay score in tournament history.

The combined powerplay run rate was an extraordinary 15.66, with both teams hitting 17 sixes in the first 72 balls. However, scoring slowed down after the field spread, with the run rate dropping to 8.15.

Josh Inglis also played a standout knock for LSG, scoring 85 of his team’s first 112 runs before getting out. His contribution made up 75.9% of LSG’s score at that stage.

The result also continued a wider IPL 2026 trend, with teams chasing 200-plus targets enjoying their best success rate in tournament history.
