Chepauk has long been a theatre of cricketing romance, and on Friday night it staged another memorable chapter. Around 20,000 fans poured into the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium for a T20 World Cup clash between two Associate nations, USA and Netherlands, and left having witnessed history.
There were no global superstars on show, but that hardly mattered. Chennai, a city that once applauded Pakistan’s 1999 Test triumph and embraced Afghanistan’s rise in 2023, once again proved its sporting heart. Tickets were priced like a movie outing, yet many chose cricket over cinema. By the end of the night, chants of “USA, USA” echoed around the stands.
The cheers swelled when USA sealed their first ever T20I win over Netherlands at 10.06pm. Left arm spinner Harmeet Singh, named Player of the Match, admitted he was stunned by the turnout. The Mumbai born allrounder said the passion of the Chennai crowd gave the team an enormous lift.
There was a personal subplot too. Friends and family of Nosthush Kenjige had driven from Bengaluru to watch him play his first game of the tournament. Wearing his No. 64 jersey, they erupted when he struck with his very first ball.
The Super Kings connection deepened the bond. Saiteja Mukkamalla, who plays for Texas Super Kings, thrilled the crowd with a sparkling half century, while Mohammad Mohsin said the atmosphere felt like a home game.
In a city famed for its cricket culture, Associate cricket found a grand stage, and USA found 20,000 new believers.
