Chahal, Khaleel, and Noor shake up the Purple Cap race in IPL 2025

While the top three spots on the Orange and Purple Cap tables remained unchanged over the past two days — expected given that the top contenders weren’t in action — there’s been plenty of movement just below them, especially after Punjab Kings' win over Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday night. More shifts are expected with Rajasthan Royals taking on Mumbai Indians tonight.

Noor Ahmad, recently dethroned as the Purple Cap holder, picked up one wicket against PBKS, maintaining third place with 15 wickets — just behind Josh Hazlewood (18) and Prasidh Krishna (17). Khaleel Ahmed’s two wickets in the same match took him to 14, level with Mitchell Starc but ahead on both average and economy.

The biggest surge came from Yuzvendra Chahal. His four-wicket haul, including a hat-trick, launched him into joint-sixth place with 13 wickets. He now sits alongside a crowded group featuring Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Krunal Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, and Trent Boult.

Orange Cap Watch

The Orange Cap battle could shift tonight, with Suryakumar Yadav (No. 3) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (No. 4) just 29 and 30 runs behind the current leader, B Sai Sudharsan. Either could end Thursday wearing the cap.

Virat Kohli remains second on the list, while Jos Buttler and Nicholas Pooran are the only others to have breached the 400-run mark so far. Shreyas Iyer’s 72 against CSK pushed him back into the top 10, currently sitting at No. 10 with 360 runs.
