Brook Open to Test Captaincy as England Begin New Era Against India

Harry Brook has said it would be a “great honour” to captain England’s Test side, following the retirement of Ben Stokes from international cricket.

Brook, currently England’s white-ball captain, is seen as the leading candidate to become the 83rd men’s Test captain after receiving “100% backing” from Stokes.“It would be a great honour. It’d be a privilege to captain England in the highest format of the game,” Brook said.

Stokes Retirement Leaves Major Leadership Void

Stokes’ decision to retire during England’s series defeat to New Zealand national cricket team has created a major leadership gap in English cricket.

Brook, who has served as Test vice-captain since the Ashes, was informed about Stokes’ decision alongside Joe Root before the announcement to the squad.

Although Root briefly captained England during Stokes’ absence at The Oval, he is not expected to take the role permanently.

Brook Ready for Multi-Format Leadership

At 27, Brook believes he can handle leadership across formats despite the heavy workload.“I think it is possible. I’m not saying it would be easy, but I definitely think it’s possible.”

Unlike many modern stars, Brook avoids global franchise leagues, choosing to prioritize national duty.

He has skipped tournaments such as:

  • Indian Premier League
  • Pakistan Super League

This gives him more recovery and preparation time.“I’ve committed completely to England cricket.”

ECB Still Cautious

Despite Brook’s willingness, the England and Wales Cricket Board remains cautious about giving him all-format captaincy.

Concerns include:

  • Packed international calendar
  • Mental fatigue from captaincy
  • Dip in Test form

Brook has gone 16 Test innings without a century, averaging 38.33 during that stretch.

Focus Shifts to India T20I Series

For now, Brook’s immediate task is leading England in the five-match T20I series against India national cricket team.**

He and coach Brendon McCullum have quickly shifted focus from the New Zealand Test loss to white-ball cricket.

Brook praised McCullum’s influence:“I love working with Baz. He’s a great bloke and an unbelievable coach.”

England XI for 1st T20I vs India

England have named the following XI:

  • Phil Salt
  • Jos Buttler
  • Harry Brook (capt)
  • Jacob Bethell
  • Tom Banton
  • Sam Curran
  • Will Jacks
  • Liam Dawson
  • Adil Rashid
  • Luke Wood
  • Saqib Mahmood

As England begin a transition phase, Brook now carries two huge responsibilities — leading the T20 side today, and potentially leading the Test team tomorrow.
