Australia Crush Semi-Final Jinx, Storm into T20 World Cup Final at Lord’s

Australia women's national cricket team delivered a commanding statement at The Oval, defeating West Indies women's national cricket team by eight wickets to book their place in the Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord's Cricket Ground.

The victory not only reinforced Australia’s status as tournament favourites but also ended their recent semi-final hoodoo, after back-to-back knockout exits in global tournaments.

Australia had suffered painful eliminations in:

  • The 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup semi-final against India women's national cricket team
  • The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa women's national cricket team

This time, however, there was no slip-up.

Gardner and Mooney Lead Clinical Chase

After restricting West Indies to a modest 125, Australia chased down the target with seven overs to spare, showing ruthless efficiency.

Beth Mooney anchored the innings with a composed 61 off 36 balls*, ensuring Australia never lost control of the chase.

She was supported brilliantly by Ashleigh Gardner, who produced a match-winning all-round display:

  • 2 wickets for 13 runs
  • 35 off 20 balls

Gardner’s performance earned her Player of the Match.“It’s been frustrating how we exited the last couple of World Cups,” Gardner said.
“Getting rid of that semi-final curse and walking into Sunday confident feels amazing.”

Australia’s Depth Making the Difference

A major reason for Australia’s resurgence has been their extraordinary squad depth.

Rather than relying on one or two superstars, multiple players have stepped up across the tournament:

  • Ellyse Perry – 185 runs in tournament
  • Beth Mooney – 174 runs at 43.50
  • Ashleigh Gardner – key middle-order hitter and strike spinner
  • Spin unit continues to dominate middle overs

Mooney emphasized the team’s improved handling of pressure.“We’ve done a lot of work individually and collectively on managing big moments and pressure situations.”

Perry Injury Not a Major Concern

There was a brief scare when Ellyse Perry retired hurt after scoring 2 off 7 balls due to minor quad discomfort.

However, Mooney downplayed concerns.“It was purely precautionary. We wanted to ensure she’s ready for Sunday.”

Australia expect Perry to be fit for the final.

Eyes on Historic Seventh Title

Australia have now reached their eighth Women’s T20 World Cup final and will be chasing a record-extending seventh title.

With batting firing, spinners in rhythm, and their semi-final demons finally buried, Australia head to Lord’s looking every bit like the team to beat.
