South Africa produced a complete team performance to defeat New Zealand by 18 runs in Hamilton, levelling the five-match women’s T20I series at 1-1. Contributions with bat, ball and in the field ensured they outplayed the hosts despite a spirited effort from Amelia Kerr.
Opting to bat first, South Africa set a strong foundation through Tazmin Brits, who struck a fluent 53 off 35 balls. Alongside Sune Luus, she powered the visitors to an aggressive start, helping them reach 49 in the powerplay. Luus added a brisk 31, while Laura Wolvaardt anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 41.
The innings gained further momentum at the death thanks to a stunning cameo from Kayla Reyneke, whose unbeaten 28 off just nine balls, including three consecutive sixes in the final over, lifted South Africa to an imposing 177 for 5.
New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr stood out with an impressive all-round effort, picking up 2 for 29 and later scoring a quick 32 to keep the chase alive. However, regular wickets prevented the hosts from building lasting partnerships.
South Africa’s bowlers then took control. Ayabonga Khaka was the standout performer, claiming 4 for 27 and breaking the backbone of the chase with two key strikes in the 13th over. Spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba provided excellent support with 3 for 27, including crucial middle-order wickets.
Despite a late surge from Izzy Sharp, who briefly reignited hopes with a flurry of boundaries, New Zealand fell short and were bowled out for 159.
Sharp fielding and disciplined bowling ensured South Africa maintained pressure throughout, sealing a deserved victory. The result not only levelled the series but also showcased South Africa’s depth and balance heading into the remaining matches.
