Bob Cowper, Former Australian Cricketer, Dies at 84

Bob Cowper, the Australian cricketer who played 27 Tests for his country in the 1960s, has passed away at the age of 84.

A left-handed batter, Cowper spent most of his first-class career with Victoria, where he played 147 matches from 1959-60 to 1969-70, accumulating 10,595 runs at an impressive average of 53.78, including 26 centuries. In his 27 Test matches, Cowper scored 2061 runs at an average of 42.02, with five centuries, including a memorable 307 against England at the MCG in 1966. He also contributed as a part-time offspinner, taking 36 Test wickets and 183 first-class wickets in total.

Cricket Australia (CA) paid tribute to Cowper, calling him "an enormously talented left-hand batter renowned for his elegant stroke play, his patience at the crease, and his ability to amass big totals."

At just 28, Cowper walked away from cricket to pursue a career in stockbroking and merchant banking. Gideon Haigh of ESPNcricinfo remarked that Cowper’s decision to leave the game was driven by his intelligence and ambition, as he sought greater financial opportunities outside of cricket. Haigh further noted that Cowper's iconic 12-hour, 307-run innings against England in February 1966 remained the highest Test score and the only triple-century in Australia until Matthew Hayden surpassed it in 2003-04 with 380 runs.

Cowper’s departure from the game at a young age had a lasting impact on fellow cricketers, with Ian Chappell recalling Cowper's influence on his own advocacy for the rights of cricketers.

After retiring from playing, Cowper also served as an ICC match referee, continuing to contribute to the sport.

Mike Baird, Chair of Cricket Australia, expressed condolences on behalf of the organization, saying, "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Cowper, who was a hugely respected figure in Australian cricket. Bob was a wonderful batter who will always be remembered for his famous triple century at the MCG, as well as his strong influence in the Australian and Victorian teams of the 1960s."

Baird also acknowledged Cowper’s contributions in various roles, saying, "He was also a significant contributor to cricket in other roles, including as an ICC match referee, and his wisdom was always keenly sought."
