BCCI Plans Earlier IPL Window to Beat Extreme Summer Heat

BCCI Plans Earlier IPL Window to Beat Extreme Summer Heat

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is considering shifting the Indian Premier League schedule earlier from the 2027 season to reduce the impact of extreme summer heat and pre-monsoon weather on players and fans.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia revealed that the board is discussing a revised window of March 10 to May 15, instead of the usual late-March to late-May schedule. The move aims to avoid the intense heat and unpredictable rainfall that often affect the closing stages of the tournament, particularly the playoffs and final.

According to Saikia, concerns over harsh weather have grown among both players and spectators, with many finding late-season conditions increasingly difficult to handle. The board hopes that ending the tournament by mid-May will provide a more comfortable and safer environment.

Despite ongoing discussions about expanding the IPL from 74 matches to 94 matches with a full home-and-away format, the BCCI has ruled out such an expansion for now due to the packed international calendar. Saikia stressed that extending the tournament beyond two months would disrupt bilateral series and global cricket schedules involving players from countries like Australia, England, South Africa, and New Zealand.

For the earlier IPL schedule to become reality, India’s domestic cricket calendar—including the Ranji Trophy—would also need to conclude sooner, allowing a smooth transition into the league.

If approved, the scheduling shift would mark a major operational change for the 20th edition of the IPL in 2027.
