India chase a first ODI win in New Zealand since 2019 as the series opens at Eden Park

India open a five-match one-day series at Eden Park on Wednesday still searching for their first ODI win in New Zealand since February 2019

The first ODI of the India tour of New Zealand begins at 7.30am IST on Wednesday, with the toss half an hour earlier, and starts a run of five matches between 4 and 15 November.

India come into it with the T20I series behind them, taken 3-2 after they won the first three matches and New Zealand recovered to win the last two.

Their one-day record in this country is far less flattering. India have played 45 ODIs in New Zealand and won 14 of them, and the most recent of those wins came at Wellington in February 2019.

A record stuck in 2019

Six ODIs have followed that Wellington win. Four were defeats and two were washed out without a result.

India's last one-day tour here, in November 2022, set the pattern: a defeat in Auckland, then two matches lost to the weather.

Across the full history of these visits the ledger reads 14 wins and 26 defeats, with one tie and four no-results from 45 matches.

New Zealand also hold the more recent advantage, having won the last ODI series between the sides 2-1 in India in January.

Gill leads the first three

Shubman Gill captains India for the first three ODIs with Shreyas Iyer as his vice-captain, and the arrangement then reverses.

Shreyas Iyer takes charge for the fourth and fifth matches, with Ishan Kishan named as his deputy.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are named in both halves of the squad, as are Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav.

Kohli carries the heaviest record of anyone on the field into the series, with 1,897 runs against New Zealand in ODIs at an average of 57.48 and seven hundreds.

A quiet build-up in Auckland

India rested their bowlers on Monday after a heavy workload the previous day, which left only two batters training outdoors at Eden Park.

Gill batted through a long net session and followed it with close catching and high balls, while KL Rahul worked through wicketkeeping drills with throwdowns before joining him at the crease.

Rohit and Ruturaj Gaikwad trained indoors and Kohli used the gym, both having batted outdoors at the ground on Sunday. A final session was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

New Zealand count the cost

The hosts lost Devon Conway for the opener on Tuesday, when he collided with Matt Henry during training at Eden Park and was taken away for an examination that confirmed concussion.

Tim Seifert, extended on Monday from the first two matches to the whole series, is the likely replacement. "So it'll probably be a direct swap if Dev's unavailable, which is a shame," captain Mitchell Santner said.

Henry came through his own concussion checks. New Zealand had already lost Mark Chapman to a hamstring injury and Rachin Ravindra to a shoulder problem for the full series.

The road after Auckland

Kuldeep Yadav is the most productive bowler India have against this opposition among those on tour, with 27 wickets in 16 matches against New Zealand.

Tom Latham, who made 145 not out against India in Auckland in November 2022, remains in the New Zealand group as wicketkeeper.

The series moves to Wellington on 7 November, Hamilton on 10 November and Mount Maunganui on 13 and 15 November.

Wednesday's match is the first of those five, and India's first chance in nearly eight years to leave a one-day international in New Zealand as the winning side.
