Australia rest Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood and hand Shaw and Harper maiden call-ups

Australia have rested Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood from their white-ball squads to face England and handed maiden call-ups to wicketkeeper-batters Lachlan Shaw and Sam Harper

Selectors named 14-man squads on Monday for three ODIs and five T20Is against England, beginning at Perth Stadium on November 13 and running through to Canberra on December 2.

Mitchell Marsh captains both sides, but the attack that carried Australia through the three-Test series in South Africa has been stood down. Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood were all left out with a 10-Test block beginning in December, the International Cricket Council noting that the trio skip England's visit as they prepare for World Test Championship assignments against New Zealand and India.

That leaves room for the players blooded on Australia's winter tours of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and South Africa, and for two debutants: Shaw and Harper are the only uncapped names across the two squads.

A pace attack saved for December

Australia begin a four-Test series against New Zealand, the current leaders of the World Test Championship cycle, in Perth on December 9. A five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of India follows, before the 150th Anniversary Test in Melbourne in March.

Cummins' side have lost three of their past five Tests, the most recent a chastening defeat in Cape Town that handed South Africa the series.

Xavier Bartlett, Spencer Johnson and Mahli Beardman carry the seam load against England instead, with Adam Zampa the specialist spinner in both squads.

Two uncapped keepers in the T20I squad

Josh Inglis, who made a century in the third Test in Cape Town and is in contention to face New Zealand, plays the ODIs but has been rested from the T20Is. Shaw and Harper will contest the vacancy behind him.

Shaw captained New South Wales' One-Day Cup side this season and led the Sheffield Shield team in Nic Maddinson's absence. "Lachie Shaw is a highly talented cricketer we also think will develop quickly and has a powerful game that will impact in the T20 format," selection panel chair George Bailey said.

Harper was the Big Bash League's player of the tournament last summer and was added to the Test squad in South Africa without playing. "Sam Harper has performed strongly in domestic cricket," Bailey said. "He is in a great place with his game right now and is executing his style of cricket consistently, across all formats."

Winter debutants keep their places

Beardman, Oliver Peake, Jack Edwards, Nikhil Chaudhary, Liam Scott and Joel Davies all made their white-ball international debuts during Australia's winter, and all six have been retained.

Beardman's first international, in Lahore last January, was followed by a back stress fracture that ended his season. He returned for Australia A's limited-overs matches in India in October and took 4-23 in six overs in Puducherry.

"Mahli Beardman's recent performances for Australia A were impressive and we are incredibly excited for his return to the national team across the ODI and T20 formats," Bailey said.

Peake, who struck a 24-run final over from the middle order in Zimbabwe, and Edwards, who claimed a five-wicket haul in Johannesburg, are both in the ODI squad.

Fraser-McGurk and Owen recalled

The T20I squad marks a return to international cricket for Jake Fraser-McGurk after an 18-month absence, alongside Mitch Owen.

"Jake and Mitch return to the T20 side and we believe their ball-striking can be a point of difference in the shorter formats," Bailey said. "They are good examples of players who have had an opportunity at the international level and have continued working on their game."

Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Inglis and Cooper Connolly are in the ODI squad only, leaving Tim David and the recalled pair to shoulder the power hitting.

Ellis and Short miss out

Nathan Ellis is still recovering from the side strain he sustained in the second ODI in South Africa in late September. He misses the 50-over leg and returns for the T20Is.

Matt Short was not considered after falling out of favour in the limited-overs set-up earlier this year and undergoing a hip procedure that will sideline him for about five weeks.

England, captained by Harry Brook, name Jofra Archer, Joe Root and Ben Duckett in their ODI party, with Phil Salt added for the T20Is.

Marsh's squads assemble for the first ODI at Perth Stadium on November 13, with the T20I leg closing at Manuka Oval on December 2.
